This is mostly relevant to Allentown & Philadelphia area Oppos, but I just found out the A-Treat Bottling Co. abruptly shut down operations and laid off all staff. This kind of sucks, I used to drink their sodas all the time as a kid, rarely in recent years but still once in a while.

For people in the Detroit area, A-Treat was basically Eastern Pennsylvania's equivalent of Faygo. They were cheaper than the national brands like Pepsi and Coke and made all sorts of interesting flavors the big guys didn't, like pineapple, black cherry, birch beer, and champagne.

Supposedly, their plant was horribly outdated and they kind of sucked to work for though, so they've probably been on life support for some time.

Drink 'em while you've got 'em, I guess

NJ has C&C

Anyway, that sucks for A-Treat. I'm surprised a factory like that only had 40 employees. I thought it would be at least 100!

This makes me very sad. I had an... itinerant... early childhood (not a complaint, it was pretty awesome). My few pre-kindergarten memories include going to an A-Treat plant in the Reading, area (Wyomissing? Maybe?) to get bottled sodas in the 70s. Their Birch Beer is a flavor I crave decades and thousands of miles away. I would never move back to PA, but there is a very short list of things I miss, and A-Treat is one of them. I'd pour one out, if I could find one to begin with.

I am going to miss them. I might see if I can get my mom to pick me up some in the next couple of days so I can enjoy them even though I'm not in Allentown anymore.

Ironically I had a cream A-Treat yesterday afternoon. I was heading back to the Poconos from Jersey on 22. I stopped at Toby's Cup for a few all-the-way. Had to wash it down properly. Even though I am not a HUGE soda fan anymore, I plan on grabbing a mixed case of cans tomorrow.

Kind of sad all the small-town soda makers are dropping off, one by one. I remember getting A-Treat at my grandparents in PA, as well as Crystal (the one that was on the Office years after they went out). Most of it was good stuff, they just got hammered by Coke and Pepsi, as well as grocery stores just selling their store brands. No room left in the marketplace.
